Phone not charging: what now?

Your phone is telling you the battery is low. You plug it in and… nothing happens. Does this sound familiar? Don’t panic. We’ll explain why your phone sometimes won’t charge. And what to do about it.

Check your charger first.

Start with the simplest thing: check if your charger still works. Try a different cable or charging block. Also, try a different outlet. Sometimes the problem isn’t with your phone, but with its accessories.

Please note these points:

  • Check that your USB cable is not damaged anywhere.
  • Ensure the plug fits firmly into the socket.
  • Test if the socket works.
  • Charge your phone for at least 30 minutes.

Do you have an iPhone or an Android phone? It works the same way.

Clean your charging port.

Dust and lint often accumulate in your phone’s charging port, blocking the connection between the cable and your phone.

How to clean the gate:

  • Take a wooden toothpick.
  • Carefully insert this into the charging port.
  • Move the toothpick along the inside.
  • Remove the dirt.
  • Repeat this until the toothpick comes out clean.

Do not use metal objects. They will cause damage.

Check your phone case.

Are you using a charging case? Make sure accessories aren’t blocking the charging sensors. Also, check that nothing is pressing on your phone’s buttons, as this will disrupt the charging process.

Let your phone cool down.

Your phone works best in temperatures between 0 and 35 degrees Celsius. Too hot or too cold? Then charging will fail.

This is what you don’t do:

  • Leaving your phone in a hot car.
  • Leaving your phone in direct sunlight for too long.
  • Using heavy apps while charging.

Your phone gets warm during normal use. That’s not a problem. It only becomes a problem when a temperature warning appears.

Perform a software update.

Sometimes a software update helps. Outdated software causes charging problems.

For iPhone:

  • Go to Settings.
  • Tap General.
  • Select Software Update.
  • Install available updates.

For Android:

  • Open the settings menu.
  • Go to System.
  • Tap System Update.
  • Follow the steps on your screen to update your phone.

Restart your phone.

A simple restart often fixes problems. Turn your phone completely off and back on again. This fixes temporary software bugs.

When to see a repairman?

If the above tips don’t help, there might be a hardware problem. Consider:

  • Broken charging port.
  • Defective battery.
  • Damaged connections.

Then contact your provider or a repair shop. They will check your phone thoroughly.

Is your battery draining quickly? That’s a sign of a worn-out battery. It deteriorates over time.

Additional tips if your phone won’t charge.

A few more useful things to check:

View your battery status:

  • Charge your phone with a working cable
  • Wait a few minutes
  • Do you see a battery icon? Then your phone is off but charging.
  • Do you see a red light? Then the battery is completely empty.

Test your cables:

  • Try your cable with another device
  • Does the cable work there? Then it’s your phone’s fault.
  • Is the cable not working anywhere? Time for a new one
